The Blaydon Races is a historical and iconic race taking part in Newcastle every year. The Geordie folk song written by Geordie Ridley, about “Gannin' alang the Scotswood Road, to see the Blaydon Races” was adapted in 1981 into the road race that it is known for today.
Last year my son came joint 5th and we were all so proud. I took this photograph and made a fairly crude linocut, I think the distorted faces reflect the grit and determination of those runners quite well so I decided to use it.
