Framed Fused Enamel Picture on a Copper Panel in a white aluminium frame

This abstract image is built up from multiple layers of enamel fused onto a copper sheet. The copper sheet is then ‘float-mounted’ onto a white backing panel - suspending it above the backing board and creating depth and a subtle shadow effect. The finished work is presented in a satin white M series aluminium frame.

I love the process of creating my fused enamel pictures, and the fact that each and every one is unique. I start with a base layer of colour made from a mix of shades of enamel powder, although sometimes I like to leave some exposed copper as a feature. I then ‘build’ the image, adding each element of the design (lines, shapes, texture) separately and using directed heat to fuse the enamel to the copper base, occasionally adding in raw metallic pigments to add further depth and texture. It’s fascinating watching the image unfold as the layers of design are applied.

The final step is a layer of varnish to seal and protect the image before it’s mounted and framed.
