This little blue glass dish is part of my 'lockdown sketchbook' series inspired by my local coastal landscape - in this case, seaweed! Making it perfect for holding a small collection of shells or beach treasures. The dish has a wonderfully tactile matte top surface and a 'secret' - a highly polished underside.
I created the dish from layers of coloured glass powder and clear glass fused together in my kiln. I then finished the edges of the dish before firing it again to shape it. Each kiln firing typically takes up to 24 hours.
This dish is just under 15cm (6") square. The underside is highly polished glass so it will sit best on a small mat if displayed on a hard surface; or I can add small rubber feet to protect it if you would like - just let me know.
During lockdown, in company with many artists, I went back to working in a sketchbook more regularly. This series of dishes grew directly from that work when I started to experiment with ways to transfer the colours and marks into glass.
