Ever since I was a child, I always associate picking lavender with summer, in the same way that I think of strawberries and cream or building sandcastles. I can clearly remember helping to strip the tiny flowers off the stalks, thinking what a fiddly job it was, and can keenly remember the smell of lavender in the house for hours afterwards. Making lavender bags today carries on the same tradition and the lavender fragrance in the winter is a gorgeous reminder of summer days.
The Cath Kidston fabric was an oddment from an apron that I once made - I took up embroidery last year and on a rainy afternoon experimented with a combination of the two. As the pieces are cut by hand and the embroidery is hand-stitched, no two bags will ever be exactly the same!
