Transfer enamels are a mass production technique that was developed in the mid-eighteenth century to compete with the use of transfer decoration by the potteries. Put simply, it is cheaper to employ an artist to produce one picture which may then be used many times than to pay an artist to paint an individual picture on each item. A further spin-off is that the one picture is the same though the whole production run; no risk of artistic flourishes. At my scale of work it is more by way of an interesting technique, It is the one technique that challenges my claim that each piece is unique.
