Hand stitched picture featuring a Snakeshead Fritillary.

This little study was embroidered by hand onto a soft cotton background with individual strands of embroidery thread. For the distinctive pattern on the petals I first stitched vertical columns in the darker purples, then carefully stitched the small horizontal patches in lighter lilac colours, gradually building up the chequered effect. The stem and leaves complete the composition. It is time consuming but re-creates this intriguing flower as a year-round reminder of Spring.

I've shown in in natural light and I photographed it without the glass for clarity. The oak frame measures 13.5x15cms and the piece of embroidery is nearly 5x6.5cms. Protected behind glass the picture is ready to display.

A thoughtful gift for a gardener or an admirer of gardens and flowers.

I always look forward to the first signs of our own Snakeshead Fritillary appearing, and when they have opened I know Spring has well and truly arrived.

I remember seeing a drawing of one of these intriguing flowers in a very old book, before I had seen a real one. I thought it was artistic licence, I didn't believe a plant could really have such a geometric design! Needless to say, now I'm always enchanted to see them in reality...
