A delightful stoneware bowl showing wide variations of colour reflecting the melting and downward flow of the glaze, its thickness and its interaction with the clay minerals and the iron oxide decoration. The purple haze, pale blue and cream is where the glaze has ran and pooled. The orange brown derives from iron oxide brush-applied decoration. The bowl was thrown with a UK stoneware and shaped octagonal while still soft. After biscuit firing and glazing the piece was fired to 1300C to make it impermeable and very durable. The glaze was applied in several layers to obtain the required thicknesses inside and out.
This wheel thrown bowl is perfect for display in any setting. Alternatively it can be used for hot or cold food with the decoration providing a visual bonus.
- All of my work is one-of- a-kind and made by hand.
- The bowl measures approximately 6cm tall and 21cm wide.and is food, oven, microwave, and dishwasher safe.
- The bottoms is impressed with my seal, the letter P, and its identity number 9760
I love the whole process of throwing and shaping octagonal bowls. There is plenty of scope for freedom of expression with regard to form, there is are upper surfaces for interesting flow of the glaze and an underside for adding an element of pleasure. When the bowl is turned over there are blue glaze runs over textural decoration, an individual stamped pot number and my personal mark, a small letter P. The bowl was fired with a titanium glaze that pools inside to cream and blue, punctuated with rich brown streaks of brush-applied iron oxide. The outer wall has stamped marks of hands on alternate faces. This bowl would make a personal statement on a table or shelf with or without contents and invites inquisitive handling. Equally it could be directly functional for cooking and serving food.
