This lovely steamer trunk has a beautiful blue interior that partly inspired the use of the cobalt blue leaf gilding. The death’s-head hawkmoth is a native of the UK, I’ve hand drawn this onto the gold leaf and combined this with a Victorian wallpaper design featuring irises in copper and blue leaf.

The name Madras Suitcase is stamped onto the front of the trunk - I’m unable to find any reference to this so I’m unsure whether it’s a company name or something that was done by an individual.

All the original black and interior blue paint has been cleaned, waxed and polished while the gilding has been protected with several layers of lacquer.

As with all my pieces, this beautiful trunk has had a previous life - the brass latch is intact and functional, as are both side handles. Unfortunately the two side latches are missing and the lid is slightly wonky! There are also two tiny holes in the base. Despite this, it remains a useful and now highly decorative piece.
