This original framed pyrography art of HMS Illustrious shows her in her post 2010 guise as a Royal Navy helicopter assault carrier. This artwork shows her with several helicopters, including an Apache ground-attack aircraft, ranged on deck. I have drawn the forward aircraft hoist in the lowered position, showing some of the ships interior details.
Following the controversial withdrawal of the Harrier VSTOL aircraft in 2010, "Lusty" as she was known in the Royal Navy, operated as one of two helicopter assault carriers until her retirement in May 2016, her sister-ship being HMS Invincible. Details such as communications arrays, life-raft canisters, flight-deck markings and the flight-deck safety nets in the lowered position for flying operations and more, can be seen in this drawing.
This artwork is drawn on 3mm beech-faced plywood, has a dark blue frame and has a wire wall hanger fitted to the back.
These islands inspire me in so many ways. The rich neolithic, Pictish, Celtic and Viking history still influences island life. The wind and waves never fail to inspire me, along with the seasons and wildlife.
