This is a Victorian pitch pine ottoman. It is a good useful size with lots of storage inside and had a comfortable top to sit on. It looks very different now to how it was was when I bought it. The top was ripped and the stuffing was hanging out. When you opened it up it still had the original lining fabric inside but it was stained and dirty. The body of the ottoman was fine though and it still had all its original castors which worked, so it was worth rescuing. It is now a lovely piece of furniture. It would be great at the end of a bed, as it was originally meant to be, or in a sitting room, playroom or study as extra seating and storage. It would be lovely in a bathroom for towels or make a great window seat.

It now has a newly upholstered top, done in William Morris’ Windrush design, edged with burgundy braid. The old dirty lining fabric has gone from the inside and the natural wood had been scrubbed and is now fresh and clean.

This is a lovely piece of furniture but it is an antique so please look at the photographs, it is not a brand new piece of furniture and it has some evidence it has lived a life, but I always point out if there are any defects which would affect its use or are off putting - for instance any scratches or loose bits. To me its age is part of its charm. This piece has no real defects, it is sturdy and fit for purpose with no loose bits or wobbles.

The ottoman measures 45” x 18” x 21” tall.

The ottoman itself was the inspiration. I hate seeing old pieces of furniture wasted because they’ve been neglected. This piece was in good basic condition, the body work was fine, it was just the upholstery and lining that let it down. The inside was lightweight ticking and was really badly stained so I removed it all and scrubbed the box. The bare wood was clean and fresh as it had been covered for all the time it had been used. On the outside the upholstered lid seat was ripped and the stuffing was falling out. This was easy to remove but a dirty job. Then the ottoman was cleaned and new wadding put on to make it comfortable to sit on. I chose a William Morris print - Windrush - to cover it in. This is a classic design and is lovely soft colours that would go in most rooms.

I didn’t do much to the outside of the ottoman, the wood was in good condition for the age of the piece so all I did was clean it and give it a coat of wax. It should now go on to live another useful life.
