Fossil Fern Incense Dishes have had ancient fern leaves imprinted into rolled out stoneware clay. The fern frond is then painted with red iron oxide and waxed over to stop the rich glaze from covering the leaf.
Two firings take place: the first is a bisque fire to 1000oC, to prepare the clay to be painted with oxides and dipped in glazes. The second firing reaches 1260oC where the wax burns off leaving the fossil imprint of the fern on an unglazed surface, which is surrounded by shiny glazed areas for the rest of the pot.
Every pot will vary slightly in size, thickness and colour, due to the hand-making and glazing processes.
Dishwasher and (microwave) oven safe.
Approximate Dimensions: 3cm (height) x 21cm (length) x 7.5cm (width)

Fossils have always fascinated me and when I discovered iron oxides on clay can make an imprint look like a fossil, I was entranced! I love the way each one is completely unique, as I use varying amounts of oxides in the paint solution.
I regularly burn incense and on one of my many dog walks, I saw beautiful small fern leaves that were just the right size, so I decided to create these leafy dishes with them.
Please be reassured that I don't use fresh leaves for every pot, or we'd have no ferns left! I use a plaster of paris mould of the fern leaf and roll the cylinder of clay onto it, to get the imprint.
