Seaside Atoll Hanging Decorations bring back little memories of the love of beaches and seashells. They look great hanging on pots of twigs and plants indoors and are ideal little gifts for people who are decluttering and downsizing!

To make the pot, stoneware raku (sandy textured) clay was rolled out using the slab-building technique, then cut into a circle. Seashells from all over the world were pressed into the outer edge around an inner ‘pool’. After bisque firing to 1000oC the seashell imprinted area and top edge were waxed to stop glaze from covering the lovely texture. Luscious turquoise glaze was painted into the centre ‘atoll pool’. The work was then glaze fired to 1250oC.

Every pot will be unique, varying slightly in size, shape, thickness and colour, due to the hand-making and random glazing processes. Creating natural forms like this means that my pots may have wavy dips within them, or they may sit asymmetrically on surfaces.

This collection was inspired by a truly memorable view I had from an aeroplane on my way home to Hong Kong as a teenager. We were over a group of islands, but the main focus for me was of an atoll island with a stunning inner lake. I’ve managed to recreate the beautiful aquatic hues, a smooth atoll pool in the centre of each dish with a shiny turquoise glaze. This is surrounded by the impressed natural patterns of shells and fossils (that I’ve collected on my world travels since a child), which represents the coral reef and beaches of the island. Thin glazed areas are a beautiful translucent turquoise with a rusty earth colour underneath, which totally connects with the colour of the earth in places on the islands. The image is ingrained in my mind, and now in my pottery for others to enjoy too!
