These abstract artworks have been created from layers and layers of beeswax which has been melted together with tree resin onto a solid birch board.
Inspired by the seascape around my home on the East Coast of Scotland, each one depicts an abstract interpretation of the sea and small islands around the coast, and the seabirds which are a constant!
The edges of this piece have been finished with a traditional Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban which involves charring the wood before cleaning and waxing to enhance the unique grain of each board.
Please note that each piece of encaustic artwork is unique and cannot be replicated. Also take into consideration that colours will vary from monitor to monitor and photographs are as a guide only and are not to scale.
Encaustic work gets better as the wax cures and hardens and the colours will change slightly as this happens.
Encaustic medium is an age old art form dating back to the ancient Egyptians. It is a mixture of beeswax and tree resin which is melted together before being applied to a porous surface in thin layers. As the medium cures the piece will acquire a white bloom which can easily be removed by polishing gently with a soft, lint free cloth to restore the natural sheen.
