Hardwood Noughts and Crosses - Executive table game

Size - 14cm x 14cm

Colour - 2 complementary woods, Mahogany and Red Meranti polished to a satin finish.

A project to recreate a childhood game I used to play while travelling in the car with my parents, back in the days when I was just a pencil and paper. I wanted to do one in wood, but also a "travel" version were the noughts and crosses did not move about within the game and slotted neatly in place on the board.

The base or board is made from Red Meranti, a sustainable timber which is resistance to warping and twisting. The timber is prepared using a variety of tools to the final finish size. Then using a router the tile holes are cut, after with the same tool, with a different cutter a chamfer is made around the base. It is then sanded and a polish finish applied. Lastly my brand is added to the underside and protective felt feet attached.

The tiles are made from Mahogany, again prepared with various tools to the finished size and the X and O are routed out using a small 1/8 inch bit. Tiles are then sanded, painted with water based paints, and polished.

The game is supplied with a hessian bag, made by myself on a sewing machine, with a para cord pull and plastic spring clasp.

Old traditional games were a part of my younger childhood life, many were played with a pencil and paper, some handed down through generations for me to play with. I have started to recreate these games in my own design, weather in materials or looks.

Additional terms

As wood can expand and contract with different humidity levels in the home or office please beware that the tiles could "stick" a little in the base recesses, please allow a few weeks for the wood to adjust, this can also vary from season to season. Wood is a natural product and the finish I have applied does not "seal" the wood but allows it to "breathe".
