This is a hand-carved and hand-printed Lino Print based on an original design I made. I adore foxes and during the winter, when I was feeling particularly cold I designed and carved this Lino Print of two sleeping foxes.

The design is printed on Acid Free 100% Bamboo A5 paper meaning the paper has a cream/ ivory tone.

To make this design I started by making studies of various photographs of foxes so that I could gain greater understanding of their anatomy with the aim of creating an image with read a fox but only with using a small space and simplified shapes. Looking at photographs of foxes sleeping and cuddling was more than enjoyable, but the difficulty came when I tried to translate the chosen drawing into something which would be carved into lino and printed. The challenge came from drawing two animals in such a small space, in a way that that implied fur and the cuddling position of them. In the end I ending up simplifying the shape down into tones, one tone could be the dark space, one could be the light space and a third tone could be used to indicate something between the two. When I had transferred and carved my design, I mixed an ink colour which spoke to me of midnight, a grey navy colour, using my Essdee Premium Water Based Block Printing Ink.
