Since being unemployed I was on a lookout for another exciting project to fill my spare time with making and fixing. That is when, thanks to my close friend, I came across an ancient Japanese technique Yakisugi (also known in the West as Shou Sugi Ban), traditionally used in architectural cladding. The wood charred by fire, is made flameproof and rot resistant, while acquiring a unique look and incredible texture. With my curiosity fuelled, I have gathered couple of long forgotten pieces of wood from the garage and applied the fire treatment. At first the wood looked just black and shiny, but the magic happened when I have brushed the char away, revealing beautiful colours and texture.
