New York City Liberty Island is famous for the Statue of Liberty, but it has another story. Few tourists, or photographers, consider the narrow strait through which millions of immigrants passed on their long journey to the USA.

In the distance you can see the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge which looms over the tidal strait Through which the Hudson River empties into the Atlantic. It was, and remains, the maritime gateway to New York City and would have been the final leg in a long, harrowing and emotional journey for the millions who sailed through it. I try to imagine their excitement, their anxiety and possibly sadness at that point. What awaited them in the new world? How many had looked back at that narrow strait and wondered if they'd ever see their families and home again?
