Item details

Bellarmines are very satisfying decorative and useful shapes that have a long and interesting history. I like to think I'm keeping alive the tradition of Medieval potters but re interpreting their designs and using different materials.
My Bellarmines are slip cast using a plaster mould then have sprigs added. Sprigs are stamped or decorated pieces of clay which are added to the raw clay shape. The Roman numerals are the date the pot was made- 2019, and is therefore a very limited edition! ( I think I've made no more than 20 this year).
My pots are finished with a decorative glaze on the outside. This one is a white Raku glaze.
Raku is a Japanese technique. The Raku glaze crackles after being fired in a kiln. I then put the pot in a metal container packed with saw dust and oil and light it, the resulting smoke and carbon both crackles the surface more and stains the body giving a beautiful decorative texture.
