Description

Organic cotton has been used from GOTS certified mills to create raw edge muslin ribbon. I have then botanically hand dyed it using madder. Madder has been cultivated as a dyestuff since 1500 B.C. Cloth dyed with madder root pigment was found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun and in the ruins of Pompeii. It is a very colourfast dye. I use a scrunch dyeing technique, which produces a distressed, unique design.

The chemical-free dyeing process using plants, is labour intensive as each step takes time and patience; a quiet protest and sustainable alternative to the ‘fast, thoughtless and disposable’ way of producing items in modern society.

The length of ribbon measures at least 2m and is approx. 5cm wide. It has a multitude of uses; it can be used for crafting, gift wrapping and floral arrangements. It would also be great to incorporate in table centre pieces, or with bridesmaids’ posies, as part of a sustainable wedding.

The muslin ribbon has been thoughtfully presented, having been wound onto a wooden spool and secured with hessian string.

All packaging is plastic free - paper tape, recycled cardboard boxes, padding and corn starch wrapping. All of these materials are biodegradable. The corn starch bags are compostable.

Gentle hand-wash only. Air-dry out of direct sunlight.

Inspiration

I wanted to create a natural ribbon using madder that had a rustic appearance, with a raw edge. This is a sustainable alternative to synthetic, mass produced ribbons that seem to flood the market.
