This apron is made from heavy weight 100% organic cotton by women in a cooperative in Kerela. I have botanically scrunch dyed the apron using the plant, madder. This apron is one (adult) size, this equates to a ladies 10-14. The hem rests approx. on the knee.
The chemical-free dyeing process is labour intensive as each step takes time and patience - roughly 4 weeks; a quiet protest to the ‘fast, thoughtless and disposable’ way of producing items in modern society. Plant dyeing fabric is a sustainable way of producing unique colours and is kinder to the planet.
Wash, using an eco friendly detergent, preferably below 30°C. Dry out of direct sunlight.
All packaging is plastic free - paper tape, recycled cardboard boxes, padding and corn starch. All of these materials are biodegradable. The corn starch bags are compostable.
Madder produces a beautiful shade of dusky pink, which I adore. Madder has been cultivated as a dyestuff since 1500 B.C. Cloth dyed with madder root pigment was found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun and in the ruins of Pompeii. It is an extremely colourfast natural dye.
