Top-hatted, red-booted, ribbon-wielding lion-tamer/lion-man bathed in a pool of yellow light. This print has a distinctly theatrical feel and messes with gender stereotypes. I'm working on a female character to go with him. Watch this space.

There's a brilliant mural of a circus ringmaster with a lion's head and top hat on a door in the middle of Bristol. I wanted to create my own top hat-wearing lion man. I'm drawn to the theatrical, like to make people think, and occasionally to shock. I liked the idea of a character with a strong masculine physique rocking sterotypically female accessories - his boots and his whip, spiralling to the ground like a gymnast's ribbon. I think the high contrast colours and grubby finish, with splashes of red paint and stray marks, gives it a raw, slightly seedy air. I've had some really strong reactions to this image. I hope you like it.
