I studied Greek and Latin with Open University. I created this image in repsonse to a call out for artists by Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery for a show entitled Roots. My OU studies inspired the imagery.
The Greek alphabet is derived from the Phoenician alphabet. The Greeks bought from them papyrus and Murex, a purple dye which came from sea molluscs.
I created the picture using software, including digitally
drawing the font . I digitally enhanced a photo of one of my dress designs on a dress dummy to look like a headless Greek statue. The dress was made from leftovers of a dress I created for a client. Some of the draped pieces looked like a bodice of a Greek lady's robe. I already had the photo before the call out.
Phoenicians wrote right to left, Greeks left to right. The Latin alphabet has roots in the Greek. Each card and print will include more details of the history of the alphabet we currently use to write English.
