This vase has been made from a single piece of English Ash Wood, shaped into a smooth round vase and stained with various colours blended into each other. The result is this amazing array of vivid colours from dark blues, light blues, purples, and oranges. I shaped this vase with the end grain exposed so all of the growth rings are visible on the front and back of this vase. It has been sealed and polished to give a satin sheen finish. The vase has a glass tube insert for when fresh flowers are used but it can also be used for dried or faux flowers. The vase is 24cm high x 25cm wide x 7cm depth and weighs 1693 grams (1929 including the glass insert).
This particular piece of Ash came from a tree that was brought down in a storm. After the wood has been cut into usable sizes, it is left to season and dry out for 2-3 years depending on the thickness. Most of the work on this vase is hand shaping with various rasps and spoke shaves to achieve the finished shape. Then the sanding process starts, which is also done by hand. Once the vase has been sanded to a smooth surface, the stain can be applied. This involves applying stains of different colours and blending them into one another whilst wet. Multiple layers of sanding sealer are the applied and sanded down between coats. Wax is then used to protect the wood and gives the vase its satin lustre.
