This original, hand burnished linocut print depicts the pithead buildings at Barnsley Main Colliery, now part of the Dearne Valley Country Park. There are now very few remnants of the Yorkshire coalmining industry, and this preserved structure is one of them. The image is from my own drawing, based on photographs taken by me, and made using a hand carved softcut lino block. This example is on Daler-Rowney A4 95gsm, acid-free paper, using Schmincke water-based black ink. Please note this is an original hand printed linocut, not a digital or other reproduction.

My family history up to the Second World War was mainly one of involvement in coal mining, so I wanted to create a piece of art reflecting that story. Finding remains of the industry in Yorkshire is not that easy, but I discovered this structure and photographed it on a horrible, wet, cold day. On returning home, I found that the memory card on my camera was corrupt and had not saved any images! Fortunately, I had taken a couple of pictures on my phone camera for the usual Facebook post, and one of them was perfect!
