Coil-built bowls whose shapes are heavily influenced by the revered Austrian-born British ceramics artist, Lucie Rie.
Built from stoneware clay, a variety of glazes for visual interest and fired to 1220°C in an electric kiln. The bowl measures 2ocmW x 9cmH.
These were really interesting forms to make particularly using the coiling technique. In this instance, symmetry was important and it was critical to ensure whilst building up the coils that the geometry of the vessel was maintained. Another tricky part was getting the thinness of the flared rim using such a grogged clay. However, I loved the intricacy this involved and had a bit of a 'footed bowl with flared rim' session!
