A handmade natural jute market bag made on the Suffolk coast.
Jute is strong and will not stretch, the handles will therefore keep their shape and will not distort with use. Due to its construction, the bag will expand to accommodate its contents.
Jute is a natural plant fibre, it is important to me that my products are cruelty-free. It's made in England using materials manufactured in the UK and Europe. I am passionate about slow, simple living and am anti fast-fashion, and am proud to contribute something that looks pretty while not damaging wildlife, exploiting people abroad or racking up air miles!
28 cm (w) x 30 cm (h not including handles) x 14cm (depth). Handles 16 cm drop. "Holes" in net are 1-2 cm, depending whether bag is full or not!
The bag incorporates some irregularities in texture consistent with natural-based materials - these add to it's unique charm! Colour may vary to the pictures due to variations in screen displays, etc.
My use of jute is inspired by the raw beauty of the wild coastline of Suffolk, particularly the Marram grasses on the fore shore.
The shape of this bag was partly inspired by French Market Bags.
Living in a port town with a history grounded in the fishing industry, it's meaningful to me to be (in a way) continuing the local tradition of creating net, albeit by the means of crochet, rather than weaving as carried out by women in the past. I feel like I'm engaging in the tradition of the place I live in, in a way that is relevant to today.
