This is a traditional woodworking mallet made from English Birch and English Ash. This size is perfect for medium to light duties and delicate accurate work. It's good for woodcarving and bashing joints into place such as mortice and tenons. The ergonomically shaped handle fits into the hand comfortably. It has a Danish oil finish. I used a pyrography pen to burn the modern English word strength on to it using Anglo Saxon runes. The handle is rippled ash. The grain changes in the light. The handle is attached to the head using a wedged and shouldered mortice and tenon joint and glue. It is a super strong joint.
Length: 189mm (7.4")
Diameter of strike surface: 60mm (2.4")
Weight: 400g ( 14.11 ounces)
I used to do a lot of carving and I found this type of mallet very useful. Also I have been reading about medieval furniture design and this was a common tool used by all types of woodworker. The design actually goes back as far as Roman times or beyond. The wood grew in my village. I decided I wanted to pyrograph runes onto one of my mallets. I am so pleased with the result.
