Item details

A small hanging made from black and purple strips of fabric and wool which have been laid on to dissolvable plastic and stitched freely all over. The threads hang over the plastic and are tied together with a bead to create a fringe. It is then immersed in water so that the plastic dissolves leaving a lacy fabric. This is stitched on to a piece of painted silk noile . The background colour of blue emerges through the gaps in the lace. A pale blue velvet cross is stitched on. Pink and gold machine made cords create the knot design and are stitched on to the cross and around the central part to create the circle. A diamante bead is stitched in the centre. The hanging is stitched on to a piece of bamboo with a black perlé thread looped around from which to hang it. There is just one in this particular colour scheme. Dry clean only.
The hanging measures 14cm in width, 17cm with the bamboo hanger; 21cm in length at the shortest point of the fringe and 32cm at the longest point.

I love to work with dissolvable plastic placing different threads and fabric strips and then blending them together to create a beautiful lace. As a Christian, the cross is an important symbol of faith. Living in Scotland the Celtic cross with its emphasis on the natural world and the use of intricate knot patterns make it an important but striking design piece.
