Description

The feminine principle is a multi-layered untitled monoprint incorporating an image transfer made with acrylic paint on paper. It is produced by gelprinting.

The image was originally conceived in portrait form until by chance I looked at it sideways and saw the way the body mimiced the shape of the landscape. The title is a play on the idea of Mother Nature or Mother Earth.

Size is about 7" x 5" (18cm x 13cm) and has been mounted, using acid free mount board, to fit a frame size 10" x 8" (about 25cxm x 20cm). It has been signed and dated on the image.

Gel printing uses a synthetic gelatin plate to which paints or inks are applied. They can be drawn into or otherwise textured. Paint can be applied with rollers or brushes using stencils or masks. The process lends itself to multiple layers enabling the production of complex prints without the need for a press.

It is also possible to incorporate elements of found images by transfer from the original as is the case here.

Any frame shown is for illustration only and is not included in the price. The frame and mount shown have been software generated.

The price is for the physical image only. I reserve all reproduction rights. In particular, although it is not my practice to make reproductions of my own work, this image may be used in whole or in part on other products such as notecards, mugs or apparel.

Inspiration

I came to gel printing after some problems with my foot made it hard for me to spend much time at the press. It uses a synthetic gelatin plate to which paints or inks are applied. They can be drawn into or otherwise textured in various ways. Paint can be applied with rollers or brushes using stencils or masks. The process lends itself to multiple layers enabling the production of complex prints without the need for a press. It allows me to work sitting at a table without any complex equipment, but is still capable of producing sophisticated imagery. I now use the process in its own right and not as a substitute for other media.
