Bees tapping at the window glass is a multi-layered made by gelprinting.

The title comes from a book of poems by Joshua Poteat called "Illustrating the machine that makes the world" published in 2009, which is about J. G. Heck's 1851 Pictorial Archive of Nature and Science. I have copies of of the prints from that Encyclopedia for sale elsewhere so was attracted to the book of poems (poetry being another of my obsessions!)

Size is about 8" x 6" (18cm x 13cm) and has been mounted, using acid free mount board, to fit a frame size 10" x 8" (about 25cxm x 20cm). It has been signed and dated on the image.

Gel printing uses a synthetic gelatin plate to which paints or inks are applied. They can be drawn into or otherwise textured. Paint can be applied with rollers or brushes using stencils or masks. The process lends itself to multiple layers enabling the production of complex prints without the need for a press.

It is also possible to incorporate elements of found images by transfer from the original as is the case here.

It allows me to work sitting at a table without any complex equipment, but is still capable of producing sophisticated imagery. I now use the process in its own right and not as a substitute for other media.
