Hello. You have caught my shop in holiday mode, but If you would like to catch me in a real bricks and mortar one, then head to no 36, Gillygate, York, where I am part of a Pop up space until June 24th. I am with 6 other artists from York, and thanks to Blank Canvas and York Conservation trust, we have the use of a beautiful shop for a few weeks. I will be restocking my Folksy shop again as soon as possible after June 24th. I hope you can visit again then.
This Japanese fabric was once part of a vintage kimono, probably from the 1960’s. It has a sweet geometric pattern, mixed with tiny flower heads and a textured weave. Its delicate nature makes it perfect as a little drawstring evening bag, or to take to a very special occasion.
The fabric is polyester, and I have backed it onto recycled cotton to strengthen it, but it is still a very soft little bag. It measures 19 cm wide and 22 cm long and I have lined it with a slightly stiff, pretend, golden tafatta. It closes with a drawstring made from a silver braid, commonly known as “rats tails” in the rag trade! and I have closed off the ends with a fabric flower head detail.
There are two short handles, each measuring 28 cm long, and it is finished off with my own embroidered name tag.
You will find signs of this lovely fabrics previous life with some tiny rust marks and ageing, but I think they add to its previous history, as the garment of a young Japanese woman. It would make a lovely bag to carry to a summer wedding, or as a present for anyone who loves antique fabrics or Japan!
I like to recycle where I can. Your bag will be posted out wrapped in clean, recycled paper from my hoard of old books and papers. It will be sent as Royal Mail 2nd class which takes about 3 days.
This vintage kimono was brought back from Japan to York for me as a present from my lovely sister.I was allowed it under strict instructions that as it was not worth a lot, had seen better days, and was considered old fashioned and worthless by the gentleman who sold it to her, I had permission to cut it up! and not to let it idle in the too beautiful to use pile in my linen cupboard.
Sooo, I washed it very gently, then began to take it apart.
It was sewn together by hand, with very simple running stitches, which I was able to draw out in long lengths of thread. The pieces fell away into simple cut lengths, and this little drawstring is from one of those. There is a larger shoulder bag from this collection in my shop right now.
