Feather is a drypoint print made using an acrylic plate. The title is more or less self-explanatory, although it also draws inspiration from Neolithic rock carvings.

The image is 164mm x 130mm (6.5" x 5") It has been printed on Somerset paper about 300gsm. It is in a variable edition of 6 plus one Artist Proof. Two have been printed in black ink, two in a red oxide and two in black on paper previously prepared by washes of acrylic paint (Also a slightly different size). The AP is in black on Somerset paper.

Drypoint is a fascinating medium. I still find it amazing the way in which some scratched lines in a sheet of plastic take on a new life once inked up and printed. Making the plate can be surprisingly demanding, since the scriber has to be held at quite an acute angle to produce the distinctive soft burr that is the particular characteristic of these prints. It combines well with other print forms too. I have used it as an overprint to collagraphs and to monoprints where the strong line works well against the softer forms underneath.
