This is a birch woodcarving mallet designed in the traditional way. I used my lathe to make it from a birch branch that was on a building site. It is great for making careful accurate detail cuts with a chisel or gouge. The handle feels really nice in the hand. It has a light oiled finish that gives it a natural matt look. I use one like this made from Ash.
Length: 212mm (8.35")
Diameter at the top of strike area: 62mm (2.44")
Weight: 222g (7.83 ounces)
It feels very satisfying making hand tools to a traditional design knowing that they will be used to create beautiful things. This design has been around since the Romans or before.
