I made this bag out of a recycled pale sage green vintage tweed skirt found in Honiton in Devon and lined it with floral cotton in shades of pink and green taken from a Liberty shirt.
It features a pocket inside and fastens at the top with the original tabs and button fastenings taken from the skirt. The handles are sized so it can be carried in the hand or over the shoulder. Robust, practical and perfect for stuffing with books, umbrellas, water, purses, make-up bags, random shopping etc.
Because each of my bags started as something else (a wool kilt, a tweed jacket, a cotton shirt) they come with a unique numbered card that shows what they used to be, and where they came from – a sort of bag birth certificate.
If your bag gets grubby after a few months of bouncing around on public transport and out shopping, you can machine wash it on a gentle wool setting. All the materials I use are machine washed before the stitching starts, so they are used to it.
