'Penny Rugs' were made during the American Civil War, The tiny pieces of felt, maybe from soldiers uniforms, were cut into circles, using coins as templates, and blanket-stitched to larger pieces of fabric. Although called Panny Rugs, in fact these items were usually made into table mats, cushion covers, or maybe bed throws.
