A driftwood stick from Portwrinkle beach in Cornwall, has been whittles into a crochet hook and used to create a textile wall hanging depicting the different coloured periwinkle shells found there. They glow like E.T.'s finger against the grey shingle of the beach, and I spent many happy hours as a child collecting them.
The piece measures approximately 57 x 112 cm and is worked using the Tunisian crochet technique, the hook remaining to act as a hanging bar and ensure it remains unique and unrepeatable.
This piece uses the traditional craft skills of whittling a crochet to create a piece of fibre art. I imagine the driftwood stick as a storytelling tool, revealing its history through the yarns that work best with it.
