I look for unusual shaped stones which lend themselves to inventive weaving. I love the challenge of securing a stone that has no drilled hole - I'll spend a long time just handling the stone to get a feel for what will work. The whole process is very organic - I usually only start with a vague idea of what the finished piece will look like, & the stone dictates the rest!
Note that I use undrilled tumblestones rather than highly finished & shaped stones so the stones may contain some slight scratches / imperfections - I try to cover these with the weave & so any visible scratches are generally small & not noticeable!
