I love practical fabrics, and this hard-wearing pvc with its strong colours is a joy to transform from discarded waste to useful accessory. With a boat-y Dad and a childhood on the beach or in and on the sea, it's no surprise that I'm attracted to all things nautical. Nautical flags came to mind because they too use strong block colour, and I'm familiar with some of the meanings - we use them when racing dinghies around Mount's Bay; they tell the fleet when to set off and where to go!
I've translated the formal nautical meanings to phrases which mean more to us in everyday life. For example, this bag shows M 'My vessel is stopped and making no way through the water' which translates to 'I'm not going anywhere'. The P means 'In port. All personnel return to ship, the vessel is about to proceed to sea' which translates to ' Get on board - we're off!'
