This wipe-clean pvc tote bag measures 38 cm x 39 cm which is roomy enough for carrying a laptop in its sleeve along with a packed lunch. The fabric scraps are left over from making boat and trailer covers in Cornwall, and are painstakingly patched together with marine grade thread in a strong zig zag stitch. The webbing handles are flexible and strong; they're 2.5cm wide so won't cut into your hands .

The design is a replica of the traditional nautical flags which are still used at sea today. Each flag represents a letter, and each has a meaning. This bag shows X and M.

Welcome! This is a very new shop and I'll be adding lots of other items soon. Look out for more hip bags, hip pouches, bags, hats, aprons, coin pouches, tote bags and shoulder bags. All made from recycled, salvaged or found materials.

I was brought up in a nautical family and Dad loved to teach us about knots and flags and the points of sail. Some of the flags started to have even more meaning for me when I began to race a sailing dinghy near St Michael's Mount ( see pic!) - flags tell you when to start and which way to go - very important.
It occurred to me that the meanings of the flags could be translated from the formally nautical so that they could have pertinence in ordinary life.

Here are my efforts to translate:
When displayed from a ship X means 'Stop carrying out your intentions and watch for my signals' which translates to 'Stop what you're doing and wait for my cue'
M usually means 'My vessel is stopped and making no way through the water' which translates to 'I'm not going anywhere'.

Look out for others in later listings - or get in touch if you'd like particular letters.
