This is the second spider pendant I have made as a pair with the classic garden spider pendant shown elsewhere in my shop. This particular spider is a species called a crab spider which uses a flower to hunt pollenating insects, such as the blue cranesbill shown here, rather than spinning a web. I have made the abdomen flatter and the front legs much longer than the back legs to accurately recreate the pose this spider usually holds. I am particularly drawn by the irony that the delicately beautiful flower which is designed to attract insects to it, and which is a resource they need to live, becomes literally a honey trap for the unwary. The flower has been hand carved, domed, given a satin petal like finish and hand engraved by me to show the petal edges and the creases in the petal as it narrows towards the centre of the bloom. The spider itself features wire work and granulation with highly polished sterling and fine silver details. This striking and extremely unusual piece of miniature sculpture would make a fantastic gift for anyone who loves nature or gardening and measures 27 mm across, suspended from a 450 mm sterling silver chain. The final picture shows it next to a 3" or 80 mm vintage lipstick case to give a sense of scale.
It is carefully packaged in a gift box fastened with a bow.
