This original artwork was inspired by a large oak leaf I found on top of a hedge in autumn, just as it was part way through changing from green to brown. It has been made by carefully laying out wool fibres in several fine layers, combining the shades for the leaf carefully to evoke the tones I saw in the one I collected. The leaf has been placed onto a silk-square background to frame it, as if it’s being seen against a beautiful blue sky, then the whole piece has been entirely hand felted using hot soapy water and a lot of careful pressure and rolling. Once dry I have used free motion machine embroidery to add the stem and bring out the leaf outline and veins.

The finished piece has been stretched and stapled around a Windsor and Newton artist’s canvas so that the beauty of the textures can be clearly seen. It really is a lovely effect when the light catches the soft silk fibres and they shimmer.

The picture measures 20.5 cm x 20.5 cm and is 2.5 cm deep (measurements are approximate.) It is strung with picture cord ready to hang on your wall and would look lovely grouped with other nature-inspired pieces. It will be carefully wrapped and sent by Royal Mail First Class Recorded Delivery which will require someone to accept it when it arrives. I have loved making and stitching it.
