The Victorian replica nightgown or christening robe is hand embroidered with a variety of motifs inspired by Victorian needlework samplers including birds, bees, and flowers. The alphabet and numbers 1 - 10 feature along the bottom of the robe as they would have featured in the samplers. Sayings,often teaching a moral, were a common feature of Victorian samplers and they also feature on the robe.
The robe or gown is embroidered on both sides, completely in hand embroidery using stitches that were fashionable during the Victorian era. Some of the bees were creating using a technique called Victorian tufting - very popular during this time - making the bee fluffy and very tactile.
The embroidery is very detailed and there is an immense amount on the gown. I can only add 5 photos to the listing, but am very happy to supply if you contact me.

I spent the year as an Artist in Residence at a museum with a vast and varied history. The building, its history and artifacts were so inspirational I created a body of work based on the history of the museum. This work was inspired by the Victorian kitchen and the way of life during Victorian times. During the Victorian era it was seen as essential that every female could embroider to a high standard and samplers were produced as evidence of the standard of embroidery. Often girls were taught embroidery before reading and writing, with their work on samplers often teaching these skills.
The motifs were inspired by those within the museum and from further research into Victorian samplers. The stitches and colour palette are the same as would have been used at this time.
