Item details

The image is semi-abstract but inspired by the landscape of Northern England, specifically the Dales of Durham and Yorkshire. It is one of a series, provisionally called 'Ancient Landscape' inspired by the rock carvings, standing stones and stone circles of the Neolithic period and by other land art from many periods such as the white horses of southern England, Nasca Lines and the Mound peoples of North America.

Pegasus is of course the winged horse from Greek mythology, so an unlikely reference for those who erected the many standing stones across the UK, but I liked the idea. The word fell comes from from Old Norse fjall meaning mountain and refers to a high and barren landscape feature, such as a mountain range or moor-covered hills. The term is employed across much of Northern England, including the Dales. It is also used as part of many modern place names, including 'Low Fell' and 'High Fell' in my old home town of Gateshead.
