This is a wall hung sculpture of a beautiful hummingbird. The main piece is bog pine finished with beeswax which also carries the beautiful white patina on the wings of the bird which is the natural imprinted residue of the salt spray deposited on the wood. Its a very rare effect and I love finding pieces like this and incorporating the natural finish into my own.
The driftwood I obtained locally on the Severn Estuary - it has a most remarkable natural weathered finish - I only ever found three pieces of this wood - and its all now been used in various "flying bird" sculptures
At the back of the piece is a protruding screw for fixing into a drilled hole in a wall - or wood. The piece is just turned around the screw until its in the desired position ( you can alter this whenever you feel like it!)

As I picked the piece of wood up it already suggested a birds wings - the challenge of carving out such a long beak was considerable - as the very nature of these root remnants is that they have been subject to immense destructive elements that have left them with innumerable weaknesses and cracks - its just so different to carving out a normal piece of timber
