Hand embroidered on a silk/cotton blend fabric using fine silk floss thread this lords and ladies plant measures 17cm x 6.5cm. The embroidered art has been professionally stretched and mounted in a frame measuring 37cm x 29cm.
Using a needlepainting technique, sometimes called silk shading or long and short stitch embroidery, this piece took two months to complete. The tiny stitches were achieved using size 12 embroidery needles and a magnifying lamp.

The Lords and Ladies is such an elegant wildflower with many names such as wild arum, devils and angels and Jack in the pulpit. Although it's rather phallic appearance has led to some other names not so complementary such as cuckoo pint (pint being slang for penis) dogs cock and naked boys, apparently there are around 150 different common names. The plant has always been viewed with suspicion due to its sexual appearance and girls were told not to touch it in case they became pregnant. To add to the fascination surrounding this plant the berries are poisonous and the sap can cause irritation, the pollen is said to faintly glow in the dark and, oh, and it smells of poo! What's not to love!
