Hand embroidered on cotton fabric using fine silk floss thread this magpie moth measures 9.5cm x 6.5cm. The embroidered art has been professionally stretched and mounted in a frame measuring 29cm x 26cm.
Using a needlepainting technique, sometimes called silk shading or long and short stitch embroidery, this little magpie moth took three weeks to complete. The tiny stitches were achieved using size 12 embroidery needles and a magnifying lamp.
Beautiful magpie moths can be found across the UK during the summer months, often seen in gardens, woodlands, scrub and heather moorlands. The caterpillars feed on hawthorn, hazel, privet and current shrubs and they overwinter as a caterpillar, pupating in spring.
I saw my first magpie moth last summer in my garden and was amazed by how bright a beautiful it was. I managed to snap a photo and thought it would make an interesting embroidery.
