Silk hand embroidered framed art. This cicada has been stitched using a silk shading, or needlepainting technique using silk floss thread on a silk/cotton blend fabric. The wings have been stitched over a thick cellophane to give them the shine and transparency of a real cicada wing. The embroidery measures 13cm x 6cm and the frame measures 26.5cm x 31cm. The work has been stretched and professionally framed using non reflective glass.
While common in many countries cicadetta montana is classified as endangered in the UK and is only found in the New Forest, although the last confirmed sighting was in the early 1990s. The cicada spends much of its life underground as a nymph, taking up to 8 years to mature and hatch. Once hatched the cicada is often high up in the trees out of sight and can only be heard by its high pitched song.
This cicada was inspired by a photo taken when I visited Cardiff museum to study endangered and extinct British insects.
