I’ve chosen beads in mouthwatering shades of raspberry, strawberry and currant to weave into this pretty kumihimo braided necklace. I crafted it on a traditional wooden marudai braiding stand – a piece of equipment traditionally used in Japan to make cords. I added beads into my braid both during, and after braiding, including some soft leafy green ones, to contrast with all the ripe berry shades. If you look carefully, you will find some tiny wooden beads, which I incised and dyed myself, to symbolise the stained punnets we used to pick berries into on our childhood summer forays. The back section is made using off-loom beadweaving with seed beads, and I have included some shimmering beads which give the impression of a sprinkling of sugar.
I finished it off with a superior quality carabiner sterling silver clasp. The necklace is 18 inches long.
The piece is presented in a gift box lined with mulberry paper and bearing my logo. I’ll send it promptly by first class Royal Mail.
Is it possible to weave happy memories into a necklace? I firmly believe it is and this glorious fruity necklace is the result of my daydreams of happy childhood berry hunts. In those far off sunny days ‘punnet’ meant a lovely wood chip container, not a plastic supermarket one. It would be stained purple and pink from many a previous berry picking expedition. I wanted to include that lovely part of my memory, so I stained my little wooden beads before weaving them in.
