I love to see what lies beneath the bark come inside and see what I mean
Stylised owl paperweight turned from beautifully figured Spalted English Beech, with the owl’s face and claws pyrographed onto the surface of the wood. The piece measures 102mm tall and is 64mm in diameter. After being sanded smooth it has been finished with beeswax and buffed to a mid sheen.
I was playing last autumn in our club floodlit bowls comp and heard an owl hooting in the autumn air, it inspired me to turn some more of these fascinating birds. Pyrography is literally “fire writing” and the design has been hand drawn onto the wood with a solid point pyrography device, which allows both bold and subtle shading. The simplicity of shape and the minimalism of the design are deliberate – more is sometimes less – and this owl will happily keep watch over your desk whether at home or in an office setting. They are proving to be very popular as gifts for owl lovers.
