When making textile products of any sort you inevitably end up with fabric scraps – leftover pieces of varying sizes that aren't big enough to do much with but are too good to throw away. My bag of fabric scraps was out of control so I decided to sort them into colour order and make a quilt with each pile. The result was four individual log cabin quilts in yellow, red, blue and green. Each quilt was made using the improv technique, which means I didn't start out with a plan or a design I just grabbed pieces of fabric and sewed them together until the quilt top was complete, making sure the colours were balanced tonally and the end result was pleasing. I think this has to be my favourite way of working when producing quilts because you never know how the end result will look and I'm reducing wastage by making use of leftover fabric.
